The Liberals' 'no more pipelines' Bill C-69 will prevent future pipelines from being built, because no private business would even apply in the first place to build a pipeline under the Liberals' proposed process.
However, the damage will be much more widespread. Whether it is mining, oil and gas, forestry or even agriculture, the provisions in this legislation will harm rural communities across Canada.
Major oil and gas projects, including expansion of existing projects, are already being cancelled because of the uncertainty this legislation is causing.
Mineral exploration and mine development are under threat because of the vague criteria and the yet to be determined project list that will specify which projects have to go through a federal review.
The result - Canada will be a less prosperous nation. Rural communities across Canada will lose their primary job providers. All because of the new Liberal hurdles Bill C-69 creates for any major project to be approved.
At the heart of this failed approach is the list of vague conditions that a project must be evaluated by - including conditions the company can't directly control. These criteria will ensure years of court challenges for any project. This legislation opens the door to political interference in the project approvals process by giving the Liberal federal cabinet the ability to force a company to repeat any step of the approvals process.
This will prevent new investments in mines, oil and gas projects, and in pipelines.
This legislation is already killing jobs in Canada because it has caused great uncertainty for businesses and investors.
UPDATE:
In May 2022, the Alberta Court of Appeal ruled Bill C-69 unconstitutional, and now every province is appealing it in the Supreme Court of Canada.
